What to Do with Your Old VHS Tapes?

Unless you’ve moved at some point over the past 15 years, there’s a good chance your family has racked up a collection of old VHS tapes that may be laying around the house or in storage. Many of these will hold important memories; others will be completely worthless and some maybe are worth selling on.
Given the existence of fresher technology such as DVD, streaming services and digital film formats, there are those that are looking to get rid of their old VHS tapes. Here are some tips for you.

Sort through them

This can be quite an effort especially if you’ve got a big collection, but it’s well worth checking through your stockpile of VHS tapes before you dispose of them. You might stumble across old footage that you never knew you had or a film that takes you back to days past. You don’t want to be throwing away footage of the kids in their younger years without realising it!
If you do come across something with sentimental value, it’s probably worth having it converted across to another, newer film format.

Look at selling them

It may seem absurd that someone would actually want to buy used VSH tapes, but in actual fact, there are a number of releases that were never released to other formats. There are some collectors that pay good money to have original VHS releases of certain films, and you can often fetch a solid price on eBay. It’s worth doing a little research about which VHS titles have a market.

Recycle them

If you’re creative there are plenty of ways to utilise old VHS tapes by recycling or reusing them to build something else. There’s really no limit to what you can do with them - we’ve seen examples of VHS tapes being used for things as simple as door stoppers and paperweights to clocks, wall shelving and external hard-drives. Some simple uses you might consider include using the outer case as a pencil case and to use the inner tape as packaging material. For more ideas, check out this fascinating list.

Now is high time to go through your collection of VHS tapes that you probably haven’t thought about in years. And remember if you do find something you want to hang onto, bring your VHS down to Cineclair Productions and we’ll have it converted over to a format of your choosing in no time!
