How to Keep your Old Tapes & Vinyl Records in Good Condition

Most families are likely to have old film /tapes or vinyl records from the old days. These old formats were great in their days, but given that they can be up to 50 years old, they’re in grave danger if they aren’t stored correctly. If they’re sitting in a box in the attic, it’s probably time to preserve then once and for all. Otherwise, here’s some tips for keeping them in good shape.

VHS Tapes

  • When not used keep the tape in a box
  • Place them upright
  • Rewind it every time after watching
  • Keep away from heat & sunlight
  • Do not place near speakers or magnetic devices
  • If it has rare footage that you don’t have anywhere else, strongly consider making a copy of your tape by converting VHS to DVD
  • Old VHS to CD

Vinyl Records

  • Always handle very carefully and avoid touching with fingers as much as possible
  • Clean with a record cleaning brush
  • Deep clean with record cleaning solution if necessary
  • Minimise its exposure to air
  • Keep records in proper sleeves
  • Vinyl records
